This year’s European Day of Persons with Disabilities marks the 10th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD). This has been the focus of the 2-day conference organised by the European Commission and EDF on 29-30 November 2016.
Representatives of the EDbU, Sanja Tarczay, Ph.D (president) and Ms Barbara Verna (EC Board member) and EDbN, Ricard Loped (president) met together during EDPD in Brussels 2016 to announce a joint initiative – “Red and white cane” to benefit Deafblind across Europe – to Ms Emmanuelle Grange (Head of Disability and Inclusion Unit, Directorate – General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, European Commission).
The 2016 Social Forum will take place from 3 to 5 October 2016 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. The Social Forum – an annual three-day meeting convened by the Human Rights Council- is a unique space for open and interactive dialogue between civil society actors, representatives of Member States, and intergovernmental organizations. The theme of the 2016 session of the Social Forum will be the promotion and full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities in the context of the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the CRPD. As every year, the European Commission was celebrating the Day of Persons with Disabilities together with the European Disability Forum. This year’s Day of Persons with Disabilities conference took place on 7-8 December 2015.
After years of waiting Croatian Sign Language has finally been recognised on July 10th 2015. The Croatian Parliament unanimously approved the final proposal of the Law on the Croatian Sign Language and Other Communication Systems of Deaf and Deafblind Persons which recognised CSL as the language of the linguistic-cultural minority group of the Deaf and Deafblind in Croatia.
Working Breakfast entitled “Deafblind in Europe – Excluded trom the excluded?”, organized by European Deafblind Union (EDbU) in partnership with MEP Adam Kosa, MEP Davor Stier and MEP Helga Stevens, was held in the European Parliament on June 24,2015.
EDF LAUNCHES ITS ALTERNATIVE REPORT ON THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

EDF was happy to announce that it has submitted its Alternative Report on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities (UN CRPD) in Europe to the United Nations Committee.
EDF Alternative Report has been prepared in the frame of the review process of the EU by the UN Committee in Geneva. During its 13th session on 2 April 2015, the UN Committee will examine for the first time the report that the EU has submitted describing the work it has done to put in practice the principles of the UN CRPD since its ratification in 2010.
